Full Description

Cleveland Play House seeks a full-time, year-round Teaching Artist to deliver dynamic, participant-centered theatre education programs in schools and community settings. Grant-funded position. Veterans and transitioning service members strongly encouraged to apply.

Location: 1901 East 13th Street, Suite 200, Cleveland, OH 44114

Reports to: Manager of Teaching Artist Development

Schedule: Primarily Monday–Friday with staggered start times based on school assignments. Occasional evenings, weekends, and early mornings.

ABOUT THE ROLE

The Teaching Artist engages students (grades K–8), veterans, active-duty service members, and military families using theatre as a tool for expression, resilience, and connection. A central component is the CARE (Compassionate Arts Remaking Education) Program, which integrates theatre techniques with social-emotional learning, trauma-informed practices, and literacy development.

Teaching Artists also facilitate small forums and storytelling spaces for veterans and military-connected participants, and play a key role in developing the new "Stories That Matter" curriculum.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Instruction and Program Delivery

  • ·Lead theatre-based instruction in CARE and enrichment programs for students and community participants including veterans and military families
  • ·Plan and implement lessons supporting social-emotional learning, literacy, and creative expression
  • ·Adapt teaching strategies for diverse learners across age groups and backgrounds

Storytelling, Forums and Curriculum Innovation

  • ·Facilitate forums and storytelling sessions for veterans and military-connected participants
  • ·Model active listening techniques to foster dialogue, reflection, and community-building
  • ·Contribute to creating, promoting, and piloting the "Stories That Matter" curriculum

Learning Environment and Culture

  • ·Foster safe, inclusive, trauma-informed learning environments
  • ·Model anti-racist, culturally competent, community-responsive teaching practices

Collaboration and Community Engagement

  • ·Partner with school staff, community organizations, and military-connected groups
  • ·Build relationships with students, educators, veterans, and families
  • ·Support participant access to professional theatre opportunities at CPH

Program Support

  • ·Maintain attendance records and complete weekly program reporting
  • ·Support curriculum development and program evaluation
  • ·Assist with summer theatre programming and special initiatives
  • ·Substitute for fellow Teaching Artists as needed
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • ·Strong communication and interpersonal skills across diverse populations
  • ·Experience working with youth, groups, or community-based populations
  • ·Commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and community engagement
  • ·Ability to problem-solve and adapt in dynamic environments
  • ·Must obtain required background checks including fingerprinting
PREFERRED
  • ·Background in education, theatre, social work, or related field
  • ·Experience in diverse education or community-based settings
  • ·Familiarity with trauma-informed practices or social-emotional learning
  • ·Experience working with military-connected populations, veterans, or family support programs
EDUCATION

Degree in education, theatre, drama therapy, social work, or related field encouraged but not required. Equivalent experience including military service, leadership, or community-based work strongly considered.

COMPENSATION

$36,000–$42,000/year. Full-time, year-round, grant-funded.
